FAQ's
What is a social entrepreneur?
A person using entrepreneurial methods to deliver social benefit to a community. In most cases tackling a social problem is the primary purpose of the initiative rather a incidental outcome.
Can I apply for funding from other organisations at the same time?
Yes you can, though it is crucial that your idea includes a mechanism through which you can earn income.
If my application is successful, how soon will I receive the money?
UnLtd South Africa’s awards consist of financial and non-financial support. The package of support is developed by a member of UnLtd’s team in partnership with you and according to your needs. A contract is agreed prior to any money being paid out and delivery timescales are discussed as part of this agreement. It may be that we require you to develop or research some aspects of your idea further before we make a first payment to you. It is also possible that further tranches of your award are withheld until previously agreed milestones are reached.
Does UnLtd SA require me to 'brand' my project with its logo?
We do like to be acknowledged as a funder but it is more important to us that you join our network of social entrepreneurs and share your networks and ideas with others.
What kind of return do you expect on your investment?
We agree the terms of the return on the original investment with you. At Level 1 we have are less concerned about generating financial return and more concerned with the following outcomes:
Your personal development
The impact your project has on the community around you.
The financial sustainability of your project
The impact of our non-financial support on you and your project
What reporting do we require – how often and what kind?
Reports are made at your regular one to one meetings with us and at the end of the contract period with UnLtd. Typically these consist of progress reports against agreed milestones. Prior to releasing further funds to you a financial review is conducted where we will check that the awards monies have been spent according to the budget you agreed with us. Crucially we will look to see that your project is having an impact on the social problem you identified in your initial application to us, it is very important that you are 'active' during your award!
Is there a contract to sign?
Yes there is a contract and it includes some key points such as spending the grant money according to your agreed budget and keeping accurate financial records.
If I have to move to Johannesburg, can my organisation in Cape Town still get the award?
At the moment UnLtd South Africa is only working in the Western Cape and our model requires that we can meet regularly with you. This means that if you move beyond our geographic boundaries you would lose your award.
What kind of support can you give to help me develop my idea before I receive an award?
Support plans are developed based on the individuals award winners needs and may include coaching, training, mentorship and access to networks.
What if I use all the money in the first month?
Part of the application involves submitting a realistic budget and cash flow if necessary. The award is typically staggered over several payments so this wouldn’t be possible!
Do I need an actual budget – I am not sure what it will be if I am still developing an idea?
If this is the case we would do some preliminary work with you and help you to develop a budget.
